To Drop or not to Drop?
Dropper, Mentors Speak

To Drop or not to Drop?

Preparing for an entrance exam is a very crucial process as it determines one’s career path and establishes the foundation for one’s future. This path is quite troublesome and hence not very easy for most.

The question of whether or not to take a drop for JEE bothers every engineering aspirant after the 12th standard. The answer to this question varies from person to person, mostly because of varying capabilities, expectations, career decisions, income backgrounds etc.

In my view, you must analyze your performance. After giving your first attempt at the entrance exams, if you are not satisfied with your results, then you should introspect your preparation and ask yourselves a few questions. Did you give your best? If time permits, can you outshine your previous performance?

Here I will not enforce to you my opinion on taking a drop or not, but I will present you some advantages and problems faced by a dropper which will help you know what you are getting into and assist you in making a wise decision.

Some of the problem faced by students in dropping a year-
  1. First is to convince parents to drop a year to prepare for JEE. Usually, parents are caring and overprotective about their child, hence the refrain their kids from taking a risk this big. So convincing them to do so might be a challenge.
  2. The expectation of society increases which leads to a lot of mental pressure and even depression in worst cases.
  3. It needs a lot of dedication and courage to revisit and study those topics again which leads to frustration. Moreover, a dropper has to go through the 2-year syllabus in a period of less than a year which requires a lot of hard work.
  4. Sometimes, after going through the same topics, lack of interest arises and leads to monotonous schedule

Some of the advantages of taking a drop-
  1. In the drop year, droppers have to concentrate on preparation for JEE, no worries about preparation for board exams.
  2. Droppers don’t have to devote daily hours in school giving them get enough time for preparation.
  3. After going through the same topics again, the grip on that syllabus becomes strong.
  4. In this drop year, you not only learn concepts of physics, chemistry and maths but more like management of time, and stress and management of many more things. Keep this thing also in your mind that you’re not wasting the year, but you’re investing it to boost up yourself, your capabilities, your ideas, your knowledge, your understanding and to learn the art of dealing with many difficult situations of life.
  5. The IITs are recognised as one of the top institutions all around the globe. It is without a doubt that the level of exposure an IITian receives is no match for any other institution in the country. Be it in terms of top-class academicians, sports facilities or research experience, domestic and international. The experiences for a student in an IIT campus are priceless and stays with you for life.
  6. If you are not taking any risk, you are taking a bigger risk. Instead of regretting your future years for not reattempting the exam, you should take a drop for JEE and appear for the exam, armoured with your best preparation. A drop for the JEE preparation is your chance of taking that risk and stepping ahead towards a better future. Even if you don’t get in, you’ll know you tried your best!
